IDEAS Project

Project Description
IDEAS is a Helmholtz Information & Data Science School at the interface of environmental and life sciences and modern data science. Our goal is to train researchers who can build methods that are not only accurate, but also robust, interpretable, and scientifically credible in real-world, high-uncertainty settings. IDEAS connects two application pillars—Environmental Sciences and Life Sciences & Health—through shared data science topics such as hybrid learning, robustness under dataset shift, explainability, and generative AI grounded in domain knowledge. IDEAS brings together the Helmholtz Center for Environmental Research (UFZ), the Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf (HZDR), Leipzig University, TU Dresden, the Center for Advanced Systems Understanding (CASUS) and the Center for Scalable Data Analytics and Artificial Intelligence (ScaDS.AI).
3D-ABC Project

Project Description
The 3D-ABC project is an ambitious initiative launched by the Helmholtz Foundation Model Initiative (HFMI) to create foundation models aimed at mitigating global climate change through comprehensive monitoring of Earth's carbon cycle. This project brings together leading institutions within the Helmholtz Association, including HZDR, AWI, UFZ, FZJ, DLR, and GFZ. Led by Pedram Ghamisi, the AI team is developing these models using diverse data sources, such as satellite, airborne, drone, and ground-based sensors. The models are trained using self-supervised learning, allowing them to leverage large volumes of unlabeled data. They will then be fine-tuned for specific carbon stock assessment tasks, including land cover analysis, vegetation height estimation, and above-ground biomass measurement, among others.
